Band over Sleeve Gastrectomy
Recently there has been a lot of press about the new Sleeve Gastrectomy -- a procedure where 90% of the stomach is removed as a method of weight loss surgery. This was previously used as a part of the duodenal switch operation. The Sleeve Gastrectomy fails because patients out-eat it.
"These patients stomach size had returned to normal, even though after they had the Vertical sleeve gastrectomy they had stomachs that were 90 per cent reduced," Dr. Simpson said.
"Placing bands on these patients allowed them to resume having small meals and being satisfied for several hours. Because the band is not able to be stretched, they should do quite well with this."
"The only difficulty is that these patients had a lot of scar tissue in their abdomen following these procedures, so they took longer than our average 20 minute laparoscopic adjustable band."
The patients all have started to loose weight again, losing an average of 1-2 pounds a week since their first fill with the new AP band.
