Single Incision Lap Band
This procedure, for the treatment of obesity, was performed by Dr. Terry Simpson. Normally, surgeons performing a lap-band procedure utilize between 4 and 5 incisions.
Dr. Simpson was able to safely perform the procedure through a single skin incision located below the left rib cage. Several advanced instruments and trocars from Covidien enabled this new minimally invasive technique which Dr. Simpson feels will benefit many patients.
The SILS procedures that Dr. Simpson performs demonstarte that fewer incisions are possible and represnet a great step toward the ultimate goal of incisionless surgery that will improve patient outcomes.
The operative times -- skin to skin were 19 and 22 minutes respectively -- much less than the 2.5 hour operative times reported elsewhere.
"The technology is amazing," Dr. Simpson noted, "The new articulating instruments allow safe and easy access to the anatomy that we use for these patients. "
Jamie Feltman, the first assistant stated, "Dr. Simpson has been known for his exceptional laparoscopic skills for years, having taught many other surgeons. It is a natural that he would be a leader in this field. "
