Obese Teens Die Sooner

The British Medical Journal reports that young men who were obese when they entered the army had an equivalent risk of early death as those who smoked half a pack of cigarettes a day.

The study followed over 45,000 Swedish men who had enrolled in the army at age 18.  These men who were overweight, but did not smoke had a 33% increase in their death rate - -or about the same as those who continued to smoke half a pack a day.

Weight loss reduces the risk of premature death.
